Job Tibay is a Filipino-American artist who works mainly on abaca cloth or sinamay fabric. Made of 100% eco-friendly material, this natural fabric is loosely handwoven from the processed leaf strands or trunk of the abaca tree, a banana palm species indigenous to the Philippines.
Living thousands of miles away from the Philippines inspired him to find a substrate that would best represent his heritage and style. In his desire to stay connected and true to his roots, he has chosen to work on abaca cloth instead of the traditional canvas. This allows him to continue exploring new grounds and horizons without ever losing touch with the place he first called home.
Tibay is currently pursuing his masters in Fine & Decorative Arts and Design at Sotheby’s Institute of Art in New York City, and lives in South Norwalk, Connecticut.
