Benedict Scheuer is an interdisciplinary artist investigating varied states of consciousness and mindfulness via the manipulation of his own body. Often beginning with self-portrait photography and video, he treats the two-dimensionality of these mediums as a paper skin to be expanded, opened, and re-flattened through collage, hand cutting, drawing, painting, performance, and re-photographing. Resulting are vibrant works that question their original two-dimensionality either physically or through the illusions of shadow, perspective, and layering. Identifying as queer and mixed race, he relates his process to the blooming of a queer and psychedelic landscape in which the body is free to transform and breath outside of societal expectations. Scheuer is currently located in Columbus, Ohio where he is studying to receive an MFA in Visual Art from the Ohio State University.
