Cherisse Alcantara is an emerging painter based in the San Francisco Bay Area. She was born in the Philippines and emigrated to California as a teenager. She received her BA in Art Practice at the University of California, Berkeley in 2013 and was the recipient of the Sussman Award in Painting. Her works have been exhibited in numerous galleries including Vessel Gallery in Oakland, the Arc Gallery in San Francisco, Pence Gallery in Davis, Worth Ryder Gallery, Berkeley Art Center, and the Piedmont Center for the Arts. She had her first solo exhibition at the Pence Gallery in Davis, California in 2017. In her paintings, Cherisse investigates the figure in an imagined and abstracted space. Her figures convene mysteriously and are suspended in ambiguous and atmospheric environments. She constructs open-ended narratives, allowing the viewer to to ponder or create what might be happening.
